PAPANDOPULO, MOZART, BRAHMS
Led by chief conductor Valentin Egel, the Rijeka Symphony Orchestra is once again recording for the world-renowned German record label CPO, with whom they also recorded their first international CD “Boris Papandopulo: Piano Concerto No. 3, Violin Concerto.” This time, too, they will record a performance of works by Boris Papandopulo, one of the most outstanding and distinctive personalities of Croatian musical life. The performance this time is of his Second Symphony, one of his most important orchestral works which was composed in 1946. It consists of five movements that also have program titles. Some of the movements consist of works previously composed by Papandopulo, which is characteristic of this concerto.
The concert will open with a performance of Brahms’s Variations on a Haydn Theme, sometimes called the Variations of St. Ante. Following that is Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25 in C major, performed with young pianist Lovre Marušić, who has confirmed his virtuosity on the piano and his international reputation with numerous prestigious awards. This piano concerto, though widely known and appreciated today as “one of Mozart’s greatest masterpieces in the concerto genre” and “perhaps the most magnificent of all concertos ever written,” only became part of the standard repertoire in the 20th century.
