At the end of this challenging year, we want to provide you with the opportunity to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the dazzling Nutcracker, a ballet family classic by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreographed by Mauro de Candia, on the eve of the Christmas holidays. You will be able to experience a true Christmas atmosphere with the performance of the most beautiful Christmas fairy tale, the ballet The Nutcracker, on December 16, 1718, 19, 212223 and 24.

The last of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s three great ballets, which returned to the magical world of childhood and fairy tales a year before his death, became a family classic for the holidays and one of the most popular ballets in general shortly after its premiere in 1892 in St. Petersburg. With his version of The Nutcracker and its elegant scenographic and costume design solutions with a dose of humor, Mauro de Candia provides a new look at this ballet story, which critics described as “a top ballet spectacle in every sense.”

This version by the Rijeka Ballet truly portrays the timelessness of this ballet, as well as the universality of its magic, by returning to the original fairy tale by E.T.A. Hoffmann, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” By creating a story enriched with numerous details from the original fairy tale, Candia sought to “devise a version that would bring entire families to the theatre, therefore, one that would equally appeal to children, young people and adults.” The dramaturgy and choreography, focused on the exploration of hidden magic in the original fairy tale, make Rijeka’s The Nutcracker more special and contemporary, yet no less magical and dreamy, rather a bit like a Disney fairy tale.
