Mauro Bigonzetti

In this season

Born in Rome. Straight after graduation from the School of Teatro dell’Opera, he became part of the company of his home city. After 10 years spent working with Opera di Roma, in the ‘82-83 season he joined Aterballetto.

During this period, his most significant experiences were in collaboration with Alvin Ailey, Glen Tetley, William Forsythe and Jennifer Muller, and he also worked on many ballets by George Balanchine and Leonide Massine.

In 1990, along with a group of his colleagues, he created his first ballet “Sei in movimento”, set to music by J. S. Bach.

During the ‘92-93 season, he left Aterballetto and became a freelance choreographer. It was during this period that he embarked on an intense experience in collaboration with Balletto di Toscana, as well as collaborating with a number of international companies.

From 1997 to 2007, he was Artistic Director of Aterballetto, where he renewed the Company and reconstructed its repertoire. Although he then left the position of director to concentrate on his freelance work as a choreographer, until 2012 his collaboration with the Company continued as resident choreographer.

In 2016 he directed the Ballet Company of the Teatro alla Scala.
