Not long ago, the Croatian cultural public was intrigued by the discovery of a previously unknown libretto by Janko Polić Kamov, written by the Rijeka genius for his brother Milutin, and found and published fifteen years ago by Nedjeljko Fabrio. Kamov’s text was titled “When the Blind See”, and was written based on the content of Derenčin’s play, The Blind Man’s Love. The libretto is conceived in ten scenes and written in verse.
Due to his tragic fate, Milutin Polić never completed the opera, and today we have only his motifs and sketches.
Zoran Juranić, composer and conductor who is also a native of Rijeka, decided to contribute to the memory of the Polić brothers by setting the music to the discovered libretto by Janko with the use of Milutin’s preserved motifs.
The premiere of Juranić’s Opera After Kamov, directed by Caterina Panti Liberovici, will soon be on our stage! The prologue that precedes the opera, “Kamovljev Credo,” could already be heard at the opening of the Rijeka 2020 – European Capital of Culture program. The roles will be performed by the brilliant soloists Vlatka Oršanić, Domagoj Dorotić, Ivana Srbljan, Mojca Bitenc, Robert Kolar and Goran Jurić. Preparations for the opera are in full swing; see for yourself!
