Tenor Jan Vacík, born in Prague (Czech republic), studied Oboe, Violin and Composition at Prague Academy of music. Thereafter he worked as professional musician.
In 1985 he started voice lessons with Else Domberger-Widmayer in Munich. He completed a Carlo Bergonzi scholarship at the Academia Verdiana Busseto with a diploma in 1988. Another scholarship at Corale Verdi in Parma gave him the opportunity to continue his studies. At the final concert of Munich Singschul in 1988 Jan Vacík was engaged as Solo Tenor by the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich. Since 1993 he sings as free lance artist. His debut September 1988 at La Scala Milano with the role of „Poluxe“ in Liebe der Danae (R. Strauss) conducted by prof. W. Sawallisch and stage manager Giancarlo del Monaco was the beginning of his international carrer. At La Scala, Milano, Jan Vacík also sang the role of Florestan (Fidelio) in 1999, 2000 and 2002 conducted by Ricardo Muti. At the reopening of The Estates Theatre Prague on the 200‘s anniversary of Mozart‘s death he sang the role of Don Ottavio, conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras.
He was engaged at international opera-houses like Nagoya, Tokio, Hong Kong, Wien, Graz, Rom, Parma, Modena, Palermo, Torino, Trento, Merano, Verona, Udine, Bolzano, Trieste, Lisabon, Kopenhagen, Oslo, Lyon, Lille, Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rotterdam, Berlin, Dresden, Essen, Stuttgart, Nationaltheater Prag, Zagreb, Bucuresti, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Vitoria, Pamplona, Tel Aviv and others.
Therefore he had the opportunity to work with famous conductors like W. Sawallisch, Sir Ch. Mackerras, R. Muti, G. Patane, G. Sinopoli, L. Slatkin, F. Luisi, R. Abbado, G. Albrecht, D. Ferro, P. Auguin, J. Bělohlávek, M. Soustrot, M. Viotti, S. Köhler, A. Lombard, D. Robertson, G. Bertini, Sir Norington as well as stage managers A. Everding, T. Richter, J. Herz, H. Kupfer, R. Wilson, P. Konvitschny, W. Saladin, W. Herzog, M. A. Marelli, J. Schaaf, N. Lowery, V. Patane and others.
His latest engagements brought him for the Janacek Zyklus to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, appearing as A.Gregor (Makropulos Case), Skuratow (House of the Dead) and Laca Klemen (Jenufa) under the stage direction of St. Winge and conducted by J. Fiore; appearing as Laca Klemen (Jenufa) at the Operahouse of Leipzig; Herodes (Salome) at the National Theatre Prague conducted by T. Netopil, as Aegisth (Elektra) at the Operahouse of Geneve conducted by St. Soltesz, at Teatro Massimo with the role of Yannakos (Greek Passion) conducted by A. Fisch and stage direction D. Michieletto and the part of V.I. Sujskij (Boris Godunov) stage directed by Hugo de Ana and conducted by G. Pehlivanian;he performed the part of Tichon in Katia Kabanova at the NDM Ostrava and at the theater in Regensburg. Under the stage direction of W. Friedkin and conducted by Z. Mehta he appeared with the part of Vitek (Makropulos Case) at the Teatro Maggio Florence, a role that brings him in 02/2013 to the Great Theatre in Warsawa. In October 2013 he made his canadian debut performing Herodes (Salome) at Edmonton Opera. Further recent performances included Michalek ( The devil’s wall), Rektor/Komar (Cunning little Vixen), Herodes (Salome),Laca (Jenufa), Aegisth(Elektra), Oedipus Rex(by Strawinsky), Florestan(Fidelio) and Jira ( Brandenburgers in Bohemia).
The season 2016/2017 brought Mr Vacik to the Royal Albert Hall, London performing the role of Vitek (Makropulos Case) for the Proms concert series under the batton of Jiri Belohlavek, a concert performance of Elektra at the Slovakian Filharmonie presenting the role of Aegisth under the direction of Juraj Valcuha and performing the role of Tichon / Katia Kabanova, at the concert performance of Radio France directed by Mikko Franck.
The season 2017/2018 opened for Jan Vacik with the production of Tristan and Isolde (Melot) at teatro reggio di Torino, conducted by Giandrea Noseda.
Besides his great opera repertoire, Jan Vacík sings Lieder, Oratorio and Sacred Masses as well. He also participated in numerous radio and TV performances as well as audio recordings. Jan Vacík also give Workshops and Masterclasses, to share his huge knowledge with young singers to develope their voice technic as well as their way of Interpretation.
Further engagements are concert performances and a new production of Makropulos Case at ND Prague among others.
