After the successful choir concert performances on the Square of Rijeka Resolution (Trg Riječke rezolucije), this beautiful location will be home to yet another event, this time the Rijeka Symphony Orchestra concert BECOME RIVER under the direction of our honorary guest conductor, maestro Ville Matvejeff.
This concert features the Croatian premiere of the song “Become a River,” a fitting title for our city, since the name “Rijeka” is also the Croatian word for “river.” This extremely evocative composition was written by the contemporary and increasingly popular American composer John Luther Adams. The composer’s works are deeply intertwined with nature, with layered sounds like those found in the natural world, and leave an impression of true ambient meditation.
Additionally, the concert program will include Dmitry Shostakovich’s Twelfth Symphony, a symphony subtitled “The Year of 1917” and dedicated to Vladimir Lenin. The symphony reflects all the greatness and pain of the then Soviet state, and ends with the victory of unity and community, which is why it is often called the national heroic epic.
