About the Play

The play “Theater” (Kazalište) was created as a unique auteur project by French playwright and director Pascal Rambert, who wrote the text specifically for the ensemble members of the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc in Rijeka—making it a text truly “tailor-made” for the ensemble.

During the creative process, Rambert met with each actress and actor individually. Their energy, voices, bodies, and personal artistic journeys inspired him to conceive a grand theatrical fiction. In this fiction, the ensemble gathers after a rehearsal of Ivo Andrić’s “The Bridge on the Drina” to celebrate the birthdays of two actresses from the company.

Out of this encounter comes “Theater”—a play about the love for the theater and the everyday reality of an actor’s life: the doubts, hopes, friendships, and loves that develop within an ensemble. Through this production, Rambert explores the weight and beauty of the acting profession, as well as the broader relationship between life and art. “Theater” is simultaneously an intimate acting story about togetherness, about art that shapes the lives of those who create it, and about life itself, which constantly spills over onto the stage.
