Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La traviata is one of the most famous and most performed operas in the world. The libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave, based on Dumas’s novel The Lady with the Camellias. After hearing the opera, Alexandre Dumas Jr. himself said that no one would remember his novel in 50 years, but that it became immortal thanks to Verdi. There is nothing superfluous in the opera, no fleeting melodies or unnecessary words; the superb music takes your breath away from the first note and becomes a love for a lifetime.
The Rijeka audience will be able to see the premiere of this musical masterpiece under the direction of chief conductor Valentin Egel on February 8, with a reprise on February 13. Due to high audience interest, we also made it possible to watch the general rehearsal on Friday, February 5 for a reduced price.
The role of Violetta Valéry will be played by principal opera singer of our Theater, Anamarija Knego. This role is rightly considered to be one of the most demanding of the soprano repertoire. According to director and dramaturg Marin Blažević, he could not see anyone else in the role and believes that Anamarija Knego will bring her own personality to add nuance to the character, finding special strength in her fragility. The role of Alfredo Germont will, of course, be performed by Aljaž Farasin. The Knego-Farasin romantic duo became an audience favorite through many of their joint performances as Mimì and Rodolfo, Juliet and Romeo, or even as Jelena and Lovro Juranić or Cio-Cio San and Pinkerton. Just as for Anamarija Knego in the role of Violetta, neither was an alternative envisioned to Aljaž Farasin as Alfredo. Alfred’s father, Giorgio, will be portrayed by Kevin Greenlaw, who performed in the opera La Bohème last season.
Traviata has gained great popularity due to its suitability for contemporary interpretations. The new Rijeka production goes a step further: in the era of pandemics and anti-epidemic measures, it focuses on isolation, infection, social distance and separation.
The tragedy of the impossibility of intimacy with the favorite romantic pair of Anamarija Knego and Aljaž Farasin in the main roles is not to be missed!
