Francisco Araiza

Francisco Araiza is one of the most important tenors of his time. At least since 1980 when Herbert von Karajan invited him to the Salzburg Festival, the beauty of his vocal timbre, his stylistic versatility and the sheer class of his stage presence have made him one of the most sought after performers on the operatic and concert stages around the world, particularly at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich , the Zurich Opera House, to which he has been firmly connected since 1977, the Vienna State Opera where he received the prestigious title Kammersänger in 1988, and the Metropolitan Opera New York. After legendary Mozart and Rossini interpretations he was able to make his name with a repertoire of dramatic Lirico-Spinto roles by Verdi, Puccini, Massenet, Gounod and finally Wagner great success. Among his most famous roles are Tamino, Don Ramiro, Nemorino, Alfredo, Rodolfo, Des Grieux, Faust, Werther, Hoffmann, Lohengrin and Stolzing, working in productions with the greatest and most famous conductors and directors. His career has been accompanied by numerous awards, including in 1988, the Tokyo Press, Best Musical Event of the Year, Award the Mozart Medal of the University of Mexico, in 1995 the Mario del Monaco-Prize, Otello d’Oro, and in 1996 the Munich, Golden Mercury Actor Award. More than 50 recordings have won him the coveted trophies Orphée d’Or, and German Record Prize. He has also been featured in numerous opera films, television broadcasts, as well as in a portrait of the artist on ZDF television. In 1988 his illustrated monograph Voices of the World was published. His commitment to young singers is expressed not only by his master classes, but also and especially by his his eponymous foundation for young singers in Mexico City, and his work as a juror at international singing competitions. In 2003 he was appointed Professor at the Stuttgart State Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. At the International Opera Studio in Zurich, he taught vocal technique and stylistic training and was in the Bertelsmann Foundation “New Voices” both as a judge of the singing competition, as well as a voice instructor. He was also a board member of the Liz Mohn Foundation for Culture and Music, in Berlin, as well as the European Cultural Foundation Europamusicale in Munich and the SIAA young singers in Liechtenstein Foundation. He was Artistic Director of the International Hugo Wolf Academy in 2009 and launched the New Maters of the Art of Lied Foundation. In 2011 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura y la Compania Nacional de Opera in his hometown Mexico City for his 40 year-long career of international singing. In 2017, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Morelia’s Universidad Michoacana San Nicolas de Hidalgo, Mexico. From 2016 to 2018 he held the chair “Cátedra Francisco Araiza” at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City together with Marija Vidovic and Alex Pashkov. He also directed the Cátedra de canto Alfredo Kraus at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain in the school year 2020-2021 together with Marija Vidovic.
