Dramatic and comic, more emotional than one would expect, Steel Magnolias is a show that celebrates the support and encouragement among women, the bond between friends, between mother and daughter. In the hair salon where the action takes place, they share recipes, advice and gossip, laughter, wishes and dreams and hard times. In smart, vivid dialogues full of jokes and twists, these women are not shallow and caricatured, but rather strong, real, multilayered personalities whom we follow over a long period of time. There are no male characters in the drama based on the true story, but they are a constant topic of conversation, and Harlington’s heroines are “magnolias” of different ages and social statuses, just like the audience we expect in the auditorium.
