Libretto: Arrigo Boito, based on the tragedy Othello by William Shakespeare

Verdi’s Otello received the Croatian Theatre Award for the best opera performance of the 2014/2015 and 2016/2017 seasons, and we are renewing it for a guest performance in Crete in the fall of 2022, on the stage of the newly opened Cultural and Conference Center in Heraklion.

Based on the 2017 audience vote, Anamarija Knego as Desdemona and Giorgio Surian as Iago were declared the best roles in the opera program of the 2016/2017 season, while Otello was chosen as the best opera performance as a whole. The audience also selected the performance as the best show among all the premieres of all the artistic branches of the Rijeka Theatre in the 2016/2017 season.

Verdi’s “Otello” is not an opera in which a single aria stands out, which is then expected at special concerts – it is a harmonious, homogeneous and melodious opera, the beauty of which comes to the fore when handled by connoisseurs.

Thanks to the creative protagonists, the scenes had a double strength, Shakespearean and Verdian, realized with plastic, suggestive lighting, a row of spotlights, the effects of contrasting light and red images.

The opera is performed in Italian with Croatian captions.
